Screening Bamboos - while many different species of bamboo are appropriate for creating living screens, we have a select few which are excellent choices for most applications.

'Golden' Bamboo |
|
| Phyllostachys aurea ('Golden Bamboo' - a green, not yellow, bamboo)

'rubro' |
|
| Phyllostachys rubromarginata
(Red Margin Bamboo) Named for the deep red edge of the leaf sheath - only visible during spring shoot.
Another excellent screener and the fastest growing of the Phyllostachys species, reaching 60ft. max. ht., 3" max. diameter in our climate. This plant is a prolific 'shooter' creating a living wall of green that sways gently in the breeze. One of our top picks for screening bamboo. |

P. nigra 'Henon' |
|
| Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon'
Another one of our favorites, P. nigra 'Henon' is a terrific screening bamboo. With its dense foliage and long, arching limbs (~ 2.5ft), 'Henon' provides excellent screening density. 'Henon' is a giant bamboo, reaching 60ft max. ht. and 4" max. culm diameter at maturity. Stately, tree-like and very soothing to the eye, P. nigra 'Henon' takes approx. 25 years to reach its mature size, providing exceptional screening coverage as it matures. As the grove grows, its shaded culms turn 'cool' gray, creating stunning groves. |

P. amarus |
|
| Pleioblastus amarus
A jewel of a screening bamboo, P. amarus has a 'tight' running growth habit, along with a short limbed, feathery leaf distribution. Its culms age to a dark mustard yellow, contrasting nicely with its deep green foliage. The best of both worlds, amarus gives excellent, dense foliage in a narrow depth, while allowing the contrasting culms to be seen. These characteristics make it well suited for small scale, contained plantings - walkways, poolside screening, living fences and more. Max. ht. ~24ft (our farm), Max. culm diameter - 0.8". |
