How Do I Create a Privacy Screen With Bamboo?
As described in our 'Bamboo Types' information page, there are two main categories of bamboo:
Running Bamboos (a.k.a. 'Leptomorph' bamboos) and
Clumping Bamboos (a.k.a. 'Pachymorph' bamboos).
|
For Running Bamboos:
Running bamboos are named for their spreading growth habit, emerging from rhizomes that spread out in all directions. For anyone familiar with St. Augustine grass 'runners', you can understand that running bamboo rhizomes are larger, sub-terranean versions of these grass cousins.
As these are spreading, replicating bamboos, larger linear footage plantings can be filled with relatively few bamboos, initially, allowing these parent plants to replicate and fill the spaces between.
In our climate zone, planting one bamboo every 5 to 10 feet along a linear 'run' will usually result in a dense horizontal screen within 3 years.

For Clumping Bamboos:
Clumping bamboos are self-contained and grow to a maximum base diameter. This diameter varies with species / subtype, but will dictate the plants' appropriate spacing to create an impenetrable, living barrier.
This spacing ranges from every 3 feet to every 8-10 feet, and should be tailored to specific screening coverage needs and sunlight conditions.
